Jeden z czołowych amerykańskich magazynów muzycznych, „Rolling Stone”, stworzył listę 100 najważniejszych nagrań oraz albumów mijającej dekady. Wyboru dokonywała liczna grupa ludzi związanych ze światem muzyki. Nie zabrakło tu oczywiście artystów, którzy tę muzykę tworzą i wykonują. Jest też spora reprezentacja dziennikarzy muzycznych. Każdy z nich ułożył własną subiektywną listę najlepszych 25 piosenek i płyt, które wydane zostały w okresie między 2000 a 2009 rokiem, a następnie – po zliczeniu wszystkich oddanych głosów – magazyn „Rolling Stone” otrzymał poniższe zestawienie.
Do takich rankingów należy jednak podchodzić z pewnym dystansem, jako że zawsze, gdy wyboru tego, co rzekomo w muzyce najlepsze, dokonują osoby związane z branżą muzyczną (i to niekoniecznie dobrane według jakiegoś jasnego kryterium), należy spodziewać się wyników, które nie zadowolą przeciętnego odbiorcy muzyki. W zestawieniu, które ukształtowane zostało zgodnie z powyższym schematem, przeważać bowiem będą wydawnictwa, które chociaż przez krytyków są wysoce cenione, to nie spotkały się z masowym zainteresowaniem odbiorców. Nie inaczej jest i tym razem. Warto jednak przyjrzeć się poniższym tytułom, ponieważ niektóre z nich z pewnością na uwagę zasługują, a wydaje się, że niejako przepadły w gąszczu innych, wydanych w tym samym czasie płyt czy utworów. Dzięki temu zestawieniu mamy szansę na wyłowienie pewnych ciekawych propozycji, które być może przeoczyliśmy, kiedy miały one swój czas.
Wśród osób, które oddały głosy, aby stworzyć poniższe listy, znajdziemy takich wykonawców, jak: Mary J. Blige, Chris Martin z Coldplay, Adam Levine z Maroon 5, M.I.A., Missy Elliott, Patrick Stump i Pete Wentz z Fall Out Boy, Kid Cudi, Lenny Kravitz, Lil Wayne, Lars Ulrich z zespołu Metallica, will.i.am z The Black Eyed Peas czy Caleb Followill z Kings Of Leon. Razi w tym gronie pewien deficyt artystów sceny popowo-dance’owej, co moim zdaniem znacząco zaburza wyniki takiego zestawienia. Przewaga artystów rockowych, pomimo tego, że zasadniczo to R&B i pop królowały na listach przebojów w ostatnich 10 latach, jest dla mnie trochę niezrozumiała. Na szczęście nie tylko muzycy oddawali swoje głosy, chociaż do tzw. krytyków też nie mam do końca zaufania, ponieważ wielu z nich wyznaje nieustannie nieco moim zdaniem przestarzałą już zasadę, że to, co rockowe, zapewne jest dobre, a to, co popowe, musi być złe. Co więcej, przeważają u nich pochlebne opinie dla niszowych wykonawców, podczas gdy wielokrotnie udane albumy czy utwory popularnych artystów całkowicie niezasłużenie są przez nich deprecjonowane.
